Academic Area: Calendar Time Displays and Materials

In today's Academic Area we have gathered some more great examples of displays and materials we have seen in our referral classrooms during Calendar time. Calendar Time (aka Circle Time, Morning Meeting, AM Group) is a staple in many classrooms and provides a great opportunity for daily practice of functional skills.

Displays

We have seen a variety of displays during calendar time. We love these interactive options!

Student Materials
In addition to having interactive components to the calendar display, we find it so beneficial when teachers also have interactive student materials to allow individuals to stay on-task and practice their skills.

Troubleshooting
Calendar time can sometimes pose some challenges for students. Below are some clever ideas we have seen that increase student success:

If a student struggles with turn-taking, creating a visual support for students to know when it will be their turn can be a great strategy!

Sometimes the calendar display can be very visually overwhelming and makes it hard for students, particularly those with visual sensory differences, to filter out unnecessary visual clutter during other times of the day. We LOVE this idea of using a moveable curtain to cover up the display when it is not in use.

When students are seated at the carpet, sometimes it can be hard for them to sit without core support or it can be hard for them to stay in their designated area. We love these scoop rockers for each student to give them support, sensory input, and a physical boundary!
