On-Demand Training: Pre-Recorded Modules and Facilitated Modules

Our team is excited to provide a new training offering for the 2024-2025 school year! We will be offering pre-recorded modules for self-paced professional development within your district!

We have two offerings available:
  • Facilitated Modules: There are 10 different module offerings and each module includes unlimited access for one calendar year to a pre-recorded 1-2 hour module with a one-time 30-minute live facilitated Q&A session with members of the MCESC Autism & Low-Incidence Coaching Team following your district’s module viewing.
  • Pre-Recorded Modules: We are also providing the option for districts to purchase 5 of our modules as a completely self-paced offering which includes unlimited access for one calendar year to a pre-recorded 1-2 hour module without the live facilitated Q&A session.
These are a great option for new hires, paraprofessionals, or district professional development days!

See the images below for more information and/or click to download the flyers.

FAQs:
  • How long do we have access to the modules?
    • From the time of purchase, you have access for a full calendar year. For example, if you purchase a module in November 2024 you will continue to have access through November 2025.
  • How long are the modules?
    • Each module is between 1-2 hours in length with the exception of Comprehensive Literacy Instruction for Students with Complex needs which is a 5-part series.
  • How do we access the modules?
    • We are excited to be partnering with Teacher Campus which is an online professional development platform. Each staff member that is registered will have their own log-in in order to self-pace their learning.
  • How many staff members can watch the module?
    • There is no limit to the number of staff members that can access the modules. Also, additional staff members can be added to the roster at any time throughout the year-long access timeframe by contacting Mary Fryman at mary.fryman@mcesc.org. In the case of a facilitated module, if additional staff members are added after the scheduled facilitated discussion, then they will
  • Are CEUs available?
    • YES! This is a popular request and we are thrilled to announce that through our partnership with Teacher Campus each participant will receive a certificate upon completion of their module. In the case of a facilitated module, attendees for the live Q&A session will receive an additional certificate for the 30-minute session. These certificates are for general CEUs and are not discipline-specific.
  • Can we use a module during a staff-wide in-service day?
    • Absolutely! If you want staff to access the module individually for self-paced instruction, you will follow the standard procedures for registering each participant. Or a single staff member can register for the module and then play it to a group of participants. However, if playing the module for a group, you will not have automatic access to individual CEU certificates for each staff member, therefore your district is responsible for providing these. Additionally, if you decide to play the module for a group, ACT would love a total headcount of participants so that we know how many people our training impacts each year! This is appreciated but not required.
  • What is the process for purchasing a module?
    • Please contact Mary Fryman at mary.fryman@mcesc.org for a Training Request Form. Once you submit the form, our team will work with you for invoicing, completing your registrant roster, and scheduling the facilitated discussion (when applicable).

When is OCALICONLINE?

Join us virtually from November 19-22, 2024.

What are ACT's sessions this year?

Check out our session descriptions for more information on our sessions.

Tools to Communicate with Paraprofessionals for Smooth Sailing in Your Classroom

Thursday, November 21st from 10:00am-11:00am

Are you a teacher who manages one or more paraprofessionals in your classroom? This session will provide tools and strategies to help your team work smoothly in and out of the classroom. Effective communication is crucial when managing paraprofessionals. Develop a positive and supportive relationship with your paraprofessionals to help them effectively support your students. Paraprofessionals are encouraged to collaborate with their teacher or take materials back to share with their colleagues.

Give Me A Break: Troubleshooting Common Challenges During Breaks To Increase Transition Success

Friday, November 22nd from 10:00-11:00am

During previous OCALICON sessions we have emphasized the importance of structuring the different types of breaks throughout a student's day to differentiate between reinforcement, sensory, and in-the-moment breaks. We often hear from school teams that the hardest part of implementing breaks is structuring the breaks in a way that makes it easy to transition students back to scheduled activities, especially work times. In this session, we will address some of the common management challenges during breaks and provide some practical examples for addressing those challenges.

Where can I register?

OCALICONLINE 2020

To ensure the health and safety of the 3,000+ participants who typically attend OCALICON each year, OCALICON 2020 is transitioning to a completely virtual experience this year. Introducing ...OCALICONLINE. The same great event you know and love, simply in an online format. OCALICON stands as the nation's premier autism, sensory disabilities, low-incidence disabilities, and assistive technology conference, bringing together a cross-section of professionals and parents who utilize a variety of products and services at home, work, and in the community. OCALI is excited to continue its ongoing partnership with the Ohio Department of Education’s Office for Exceptional Children by integrating the 2020 Inclusive Education Leadership Institute with OCALICONLINE. From state and national leaders, to educators, service providers, policymakers, families, and self-advocates, this event has something to offer everyone. Learn more about keynote presenters, breakout sessions, and how to register at www.ocalicon.org. Follow event updates on social media using #OCALICON2020.

And don't miss our poster session, Give Me A Break!: Choosing the Right Kind of Break for the Needs of Your Student, on Friday, November 13th at 11:30am. There are many types of breaks that students may benefit from, each with their own distinct purpose. In this poster session, we will discuss the importance of implementing a concrete plan for reinforcement breaks, sensory breaks, and spontaneous breaks to help students self-manage "in the moment". Without a plan, expectations can be unclear and may lead to behavior problems or work avoidance. Attendees will learn about when and why to implement each type of break and examples will be provided.

Remote Learning Tips & Tricks: Role of Paraprofessionals during Remote Learning

Since the mandated school closures began, administrators, teachers, and related service providers have worked diligently to provide remote learning opportunities for their students. If you are still looking to fine tune your remote learning practices check out last week's 5 Step Plan for Remote Learning. Some of our teams have shared that they are struggling to determine the best way to utilize paraprofessional support at this time. Today's Remote Learning Tips & Tricks will focus on ideas for the Role of Paraprofessionals during Remote Learning.

Prepare Materials
For some of our students, hands-on learning materials are essential. Paraprofessionals are familiar with the activities in the classroom and could replicate these materials for home use. This would take the burden off teachers and parents and is a great way for paraprofessionals to continue supporting the learning of students.

Materials may include worksheet packets, file folder tasks, or manipulative kits. Taskboxes are another great remote learning support. Visit our blog each Wednesday through April for taskbox ideas to use at home or click the images below for our first two handouts.

Visual supports are also an important material for remote learning. We have provided a variety of our visual support tools for free download.

Gather Online Resources
Paraprofessionals can assist teachers in gathering useful materials for remote learning. They can look for fun art activities, visual recipes, online videos, or engaging games to supplement online instruction. Teacher can share lesson topics or weekly/monthly themes for paraprofessionals to search for. They can create a list of resources that will be helpful now and in the future when the units are repeated in other years. Here is a great resource to get them started! Click the image below.

Virtual Meetings with Students
Students are missing so much about school including their friends, teachers, and paraprofessionals! Paraprofessionals should be included in class virtual meetings so they can continue the important connection with students. Sometimes they may hold their own virtual meeting with students to continue facilitating social interactions with peers or to provide supplemental academic instruction. Leading routine activities from the classroom such as Morning Meeting, Zones of Regulation Check-ins, or read-alouds are also great way to stay connected with students. Additionally, paraprofessionals may have online "office hours" in addition to the teacher's office hours so there is more availability for students to get support while they are working on their assignments. Keep in mind, the teacher should still be the primary professional delivering instruction and assisting families just like when school is in session while the paraprofessional is providing supplemental supports.

To Engage Young Kids in Remote Learning, Start Simple

Create Videos
Paraprofessionals extensive knowledge of classroom practices also makes them the perfect canidate for creating videos for students. These videos can illustrate instructional concepts, model completing daily living tasks such as washing dishs or brushing your hair, or facilitate routine classroom activities such as those mentioned above. Videos are great for students who are unable to attend virtual meetings, when repeated exposures are needed for learning skills, or when the activity is assigned daily.

Paraprofessionals could also create videos illustrating how to use classroom visual supports or instructional tools to share with parents. These videos can be saved for future use in trainings. For examples of videos illustrating our visual tools click the image below:

Videos can be saved and shared through Google Classroom or can be uploaded to YouTube as an unlisted video and the link can be shared with families.

Professional Development
We know it is often difficult for paraprofessionals to get away from the classroom to attend professional development sessions. Luckily, there are a variety of professional development opportunities online that paraprofessionals can take advantage of during school closures. Click the images below to go to the training sites.

There are 27 evidence-based practices (EBP) for autism. The AFIRM modules include specific information about each evidence-based practice, steps for implementation, and downloadable resources. Sign up for a free account to access the modules.

Autism Internet Modules - Linking research to real life
Like the AFIRM modules, the Autism Internet Modules address all 27 evidence-based practices for autism as well as additional information on common best practices at school, home, and in the workplace. Sign up for a free account.

ACC | Course Guide
ASD Strategies in Action is a service of the Ohio Center for Autism and Low-Incidence Disabilities which provides age-range specific courses with great practical video-based instruction. The Foundations Courses can be accessed for free for all educators in Ohio.

The Pennsylvania Department of Education provides an annual paraprofessional training series across a variety of related topics including trauma-informed practices, reading strategies, and increasing independence. Access 10 years of sessions for free on their site.

Around Town Roundup--Supporting Content Instruction

During our visits to various classrooms we get the chance to see many creative ways teachers are supporting content instruction in multi-sensory ways. Sometimes this is through visually presenting learning targets and I Can statements, through embedding higher-level concepts into daily routines, or developing engaging lessons for students. During our latest Around Town Roundup we want to highlight some of the innovative ways we have seen content covered throughout the Miami Valley.

Sometimes content standards and learning targets can be tricky for students to understand so we love to see different ways teachers are presenting them in the classroom.

We love this pocket chart with all of the I Can Statements for a unit on Earth.
Brittany Bush, Spinning Hills, Mad River Local Schools

Using Boardmaker icons to illustrate the I Can Statements is another great way to present them in a way students can better understand.
Emily Ottmar, Stevenson Elementary, Mad River Local Schools

We love mini-schedules to help students understand the expectation. This handy poster has space to include the subject, activities, and I Can statement. And we would love to share this resource which can be found by clicking HERE or by clicking on the picture.

We also love this Focus Wall which introduces the core vocabulary for the unit of study.
Laura Brown, Perrin Woods Elementary, Springfield City Schools

Or this variation where students can match the words to the pictures which are used to illustrate various vocabulary terms.
Taylor Ruef, Stevenson Elementary, Mad River Local Schools

We love how this classroom made a bulletin board to highlight their classroom's Bill of Rights and used terms that could be easily understood by students.
Brian Frimel, Bradford Elementary, Bradford Exempted Village Schools

And this bulletin board illustrates the Scientific Method:
Laura Brown, Perrin Woods Elementary, Springfield City Schools

In this classroom, the teacher uses higher level community helper positions to label the classroom jobs such as "reporter", "electrician", and "veterinarian" so that these vocabulary terms are embedded into students' every day lives and so they start to learn what they mean in a functional way.
Anne Rosenbaum, Orchard Park Elementary, Kettering City Schools

Other ways we have seen higher level concepts embedded into classrooms include labeling horizontal and vertical lines in the door way,
Brian Frimel, Bradford Elementary, Bradford Exempted Village Schools

including environmental print in a dramatic play center,
Jessica Burns, Demmit Elementary, Vandalia-Butler City Schools

a bulletin board pinpointing addresses for the students in the class,
Anne Rosenbaum, Orchard Park Elementary, Kettering City Schools

or a phonics bulletin board which groups hunks and chunks (Phonics Dance) and peanut butter and jelly/layered cake sounds (Stevenson Reading program) by sound.
Athenia Eversole, Versailles Elementary, Versailles Exempted Village Schools

Sometimes teachers incorporate multi-sensory techniques into activities and learning centers. Like this illustrated thematic word wall in the writing center.
Jessica Burns, Demmit Elementary, Vandalia-Butler City Schools

Or this Read It-Build It-Write It mat for spelling
Amy Stammen, Versailles Elementary, Versailles Exempted Village Schools

Or these great sequencing tubs for Brown Bear, Brown Bear.

Or using art projects to allow students to explore their senses like these tactile crayon rubbings pumpkins
McKinley Elementary, Xenia Community Schools
