Autism Awareness, Advocacy, and Accountability for Middle and High School Students

Thursday, November 16th from 8:30 - 9:30 am

Students in middle and high school are expected to meet increasing demands. Too often, defensiveness or even shutdown is experienced by autistic students due to chronic stress. They may appear withdrawn, unmotivated, or angry. ACT Speech & Language Pathologist, Carol Dittoe, along with Intervention Specialist Sara Harris from Kettering Middle School will lead this facilitated discussion for participants who are supporting students who can engage in conversation about their needs and goals. The transition beyond elementary school is a difficult road for all students, especially for autistic students. Let's talk about getting students out of defense mode and empowering them to take ownership for a brighter future.

Give Me A Break in Action- Part 1: Using Reinforcement Breaks to Meet Your Student Needs

Thursday, November 16th from 9:45 - 10:45 am

In this two-part series, participants will see what it looks like to implement different types of breaks to meet specific student needs. In part 1, ACT Intervention Specialist Allison Officer will be joined by  Elementary Intervention Specialists Taylor Ruef and Rylie Jarrett
from Mad River Local Schools who will share what it looks like to implement reinforcement breaks in their classrooms. They will share how these breaks are implemented, how to use visual supports to communicate student expectations including transitioning back to work, and how consistent reinforcement breaks improve student behavior and work completion. Participants will see these strategies "in action" through the use of video examples.

Give Me A Break in Action- Part 2: A Team Approach to Sensory and In-The-Moment Breaks

Friday, November 17th from 9:45 - 10:45 am

In this two-part series, participants will have the opportunity to see what it looks like to implement different types of breaks to meet specific student needs. In part 2, ACT Occupational Therapist Lynn DeMange will be joined by Occupational Therapist Denise Campbell and Physical Therapist Terri Dinkelaker from Mad River Local Schools who will discuss the importance of implementing a proactive, concrete plan for sensory breaks as well as spontaneous in-the-moment breaks. They will further discuss the importance of having a collaborative plan with classroom staff. Attendees will learn about when and why to implement each type of break and "in action" video examples will be provided during the live presentation.

OCALICONLINE 2020

To ensure the health and safety of the 3,000+ participants who typically attend OCALICON each year, OCALICON 2020 is transitioning to a completely virtual experience this year. Introducing ...OCALICONLINE. The same great event you know and love, simply in an online format. OCALICON stands as the nation's premier autism, sensory disabilities, low-incidence disabilities, and assistive technology conference, bringing together a cross-section of professionals and parents who utilize a variety of products and services at home, work, and in the community. OCALI is excited to continue its ongoing partnership with the Ohio Department of Education’s Office for Exceptional Children by integrating the 2020 Inclusive Education Leadership Institute with OCALICONLINE. From state and national leaders, to educators, service providers, policymakers, families, and self-advocates, this event has something to offer everyone. Learn more about keynote presenters, breakout sessions, and how to register at www.ocalicon.org. Follow event updates on social media using #OCALICON2020.

And don't miss our poster session, Give Me A Break!: Choosing the Right Kind of Break for the Needs of Your Student, on Friday, November 13th at 11:30am. There are many types of breaks that students may benefit from, each with their own distinct purpose. In this poster session, we will discuss the importance of implementing a concrete plan for reinforcement breaks, sensory breaks, and spontaneous breaks to help students self-manage "in the moment". Without a plan, expectations can be unclear and may lead to behavior problems or work avoidance. Attendees will learn about when and why to implement each type of break and examples will be provided.
