Karen is a great advocate for her students and she understands the importance of directly teaching social skills and self-management to her students who frequently struggle in this area. She supplements her social skills instruction with a variety of our favorite resources including Zones of Regulation (to read our review of this curriculum visit HERE) and Social Thinking. She also teaches her students manners using this great monster visual incorporating the concept of over the line behaviors.
Karen is also does a great job of keeping a positive attitude and making learning fun for her students. Check out these awesome interactive trucks Karen helped her students create when they were studying community helpers.

And she even helped students create dramatic play stations within the classroom for them to act out community outings. What an engaging way to work on life skills!

In addition to her social skills instruction and multisensory teaching approach, Karen also knows the importance of structured work time for students. The Autism Coaching Team frequently suggests the evidence-based practice of structured work for students so we love when we see our ALIST teachers implementing it as well!
We want to extend a special thank you to Karen for welcoming us into her classroom as well as being a part of our ALIST!
