Lisa's classroom is a great example of Universal Design for Learning. Many of her supports are naturally embedded in her classroom for all students and happen to greatly benefit her students with disabilities.
Sensory Supports
Students have access to a variety of sensory supports which can be used during work times or during sensory breaks. These supports include a rocking chair, weighted lap pads, and fidgets. Additionally, Lisa uses soft lighting from lamps at times to replace the fluorescent lights that many students find harsh.
Visual Supports
Visual supports can be a great support for all young learners who are still learning foundational reading skills. A visual schedule helps everyone know what to expect throughout the day and is a great priming tool. While academic visuals, such as the Fundations visuals below, can be a valuable learning tool.
Reinforcement
Lisa implements a class-wide PBIS system where students can earn tickets or "Starbucks" for demonstrating positive behaviors. Many first graders need help with executive skills associated with keeping track of their own belongings so Lisa has developed an organizational system for storing these special tickets!
Thank you, Lisa, for sharing your classroom with us! We always enjoy getting to collaborate with you and see how you nurture your students. Welcome to the A-LIST!
